The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
